// The problem

I wanted to build a portfolio intelligence platform for Indian investors—something that goes beyond basic portfolio tracking and helps investors understand what their holdings are actually doing. Most portfolio tools show returns and allocation, but very few explain portfolio concentration, mutual fund overlap, asset allocation drift, or how market events relate to an investor's own holdings.

FinReview was built to bridge that gap. It combines deterministic financial analytics with AI-assisted explanations to transform raw portfolio data into actionable insights. Features include XIRR calculations for irregular cash flows, mutual fund look-through to identify hidden stock concentration, allocation drift analysis, portfolio health monitoring, rule-based alerts, and AI-generated portfolio briefings that summarize market context alongside the user's investments.

The project is intentionally designed with a clean, modular architecture using Python, FastAPI, SQLModel, and PostgreSQL. Financial calculations remain deterministic and transparent, while AI is used only to explain results and improve user understanding—not to replace analytical logic or provide investment advice. This separation ensures reliability, traceability, and responsible AI usage.

FinReview Community Edition is released as a fully functional open-source project that anyone can self-host, explore, and extend. It demonstrates backend architecture, API design, financial analytics, AI integration, and production-ready engineering practices while serving as a practical portfolio intelligence platform for Indian investors.

Architecture Decisions

16 Jul 2026 Why financial calculations should never touch a language model methodology
15 Jul 2026 Why I chose FastAPI and an API-first architecture over a traditional web application methodology
