I've been using AI chat tools for a while — ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude. Mostly for quick questions, sometimes to draft something. Useful, but nothing that changed how I actually worked.

Then I decided to build a portfolio site and use Claude to help.

The first session was a chat window. I described what I wanted — a technical journal, dark theme, PHP and MySQL on shared hosting — and Claude started generating code. It worked. Pages appeared. The routing worked after some debugging. A CMS with admin panel, project entries, journal entries, AI collaboration logs, architecture decision records — all of it came together over several sessions.

But here's what I noticed: every session started from zero.

I had to re-explain the folder structure. Re-explain that I was on shared web hosting with LiteSpeed, not Apache. Re-explain the design decisions from the previous session. Claude would produce good code but it had no memory of what we'd already built. I was holding the context — not the tool.

This worked. I got a functioning site. But the workflow had a ceiling. Every session I was the one maintaining continuity, catching when the generated code conflicted with something we'd decided two sessions ago, manually pasting files back and forth.

I got the site working. But I understood why people move to CLI tools. The chat window is a conversation. What I needed was a collaborator that could see what I was building.

That's a different thing.
